Chapter Twenty-Two

A rapping knock sounded on the doors to Lucifer’s private chamber. He flinched at the sound that drew him out of his tormenting thoughts and brought him back to reality in all its harshness. Standing at one of the five window openings that surrounded his circular room, Lucifer blinked. The landscape was the same, barren and black but for the twining river of red. Though the town had changed. New huts added to the ramshackle dwellings below, their construction improving since new materials had been mined to build his castle. New hellions moved with haste through the streets, trying to escape the hunger of the many monstrous beings he’d created with his blood.

Lucifer sighed.

He wondered if it was too late to undo what he had done. He didn’t want to declare war on Heaven and Earth. He didn’t want to be on any side that would fight against Gabriel.

Lucifer’s fingers curled into fists at his sides.

The choice had never been his to make. God sent him here and He had been the one to take action toward the future—a future destined for bloodshed and death. If Lucifer gave up now, it would only ensure his annihilation.

Belial hopped on his shoulder and cawed as the rapping on his doors sounded once again. Reminded of the interruption, Lucifer turned away from the view. He knew who was outside by the tempo of his heart. “Come in, Cyrus.”

Without a word, he strode forward and around the pool of lava and over to—the mirror.

Lucifer tensed. The shiny surface was now draped in black cloth, the spare sheet he demanded had been brought to him after all he had witnessed. The mirrored surface along with its cover was the only thing that was in one piece.

Cyrus reached out, grasping a corner of the sheet.

“Do not touch that,” Lucifer grated

Cyrus stayed his hand but did not remove it. His expression to Lucifer was one of assumption. “Ah, so you have seen…” He frowned, noticing the letters on human skin fragments Lucifer had written to Gabriel. Each one was intact, now face down on Lucifer’s charred bed. “She betrayed you. She builds God’s army against us with her own body.”

Lucifer flew across the debris in an instant, causing Belial to soar to escape the rushed movement. He clutched the material above Cyrus’s chest plate in his fist. Jerking the face of his first fanged monster up to his own, he seethed as Belial cawed and circled above them. “Speak of her again and I will tear out your tongue.”

“You still
